Due To Recent Nuptials, House Cleaner Required. Apply, Sherwood Forest.

Public Notice:

Maid Marian would like to announce the closure of her home cleaning service, after her recent marriage to Robin Hood. Maid services will now be required in their own home, to supplement the butler service that has failed to adequately clean Hood's home.

Heretofore, please be advised that applications will be considered until mid-month, requiring a variety of skills such as dusting, laundry, and mending leotards often punctured in the rear by flaming arrows.

Marian would like to thank her clients of the past 12 years, and looks forward to beginning a new chapter in her own life. Colloquially speaking, you can take that feather duster, and place it where "the sun don't shine".

In Sherwood Forest, that includes almost any area under the tall tree canopies...

Thank you again.

Buddy, Can You Spear A Dime?

Buddy is my trick shot marksman. While so many other people might use a bow and arrow, or a gun of some sort, Buddy prefers spears. Go figure.

We've done the apple on the head thing, the holding a balloon in front of a target bit where I wear skimpy clothes and he barely misses severing my hand. Today, he's going to spear a dime, like that famous old saying and song title.

To be on the safe side, as a dime is considerably smaller than an apple or a balloon, I will hold it with one of those 3-foot long extenda-grabbers that seniors use to retrieve cereal boxes from the top of their kitchen cupboards.

Mama didn't raise no fool, y'all...

Every Fall, Its The Viking Life For Me!!

Once those leaves start to fall at this time of year, inevitably I turn into Sven The Reaper, as I view my yard and know what must be done.

Yes, I adopt annually the famous Viking ways.  I will rake, and I will pillage. Those leaves don't stand a chance once I begin my relentless campaign of raking and pillaging.

(Pillaging means stuffing raked leaves into garbage bags, right? I really ought to surf the Googler to find that out...)

At any rate - arrr, matey's - a' rakin' and a' pillagin' I will go! Yo Ho Ho!!!

Banning Books

Have you ever picked up a book, cracked it open, and given it a good sniff?

Pee-eeww!!

Those things stink!!

I can see why so many people Ban them, just to cut down on the odour a little bit. I suppose you could also Speed Stick them, or Right Guard them, but you only really hear about people Banning them.

Wouldn't it be easier for the publishing houses to insert some potpourri before they hit the shelves? Very odd.

For now, I will continue to Ban my own books. Later today, I will test the roll-on version of my Kindle - even though the electronic book reader doesn't seem to be nearly as stanky...

Almost, Maine, from Artists' Collective Theatre

If you're in the Calgary area, run out and pick up tickets to this delightful new production from Artists' Collective Theatre - you won't regret it!

Set in a remote New England "almost" town, the stories collects vignettes on the theme of love that will have you howling one moment, and marvelling the next at just how insightful the playwright has made the quirky situations his characters orbit around.

Pretty stiff this morning. Awoke to some rain, so maybe I've got weather-related Fleeting Arthritis?

Irish Play Hits Audience Target

Liffey Players Drama Society

presents

"Stones In His Pockets"

"The best part of attending community theatre hands down has to be the community itself. One moment, you’re chatting with the Publicity & Media person. During the intermission, you might be introduced to one of the co-directors for another brief chat, or have a drink served at the bar by the gentleman who turns out to be the soft-spoken Artistic Director of the company. Never mind that you’re attending a play set in Ireland, in Calgary’s northwest Irish Cultural Society, and the drink you’ve ordered is a pint of Guinness. Nope, doesn’t get more authentic than that, I think - unless you’re actually in a seaside pub."

New Driving Award - The Pitts!

Watching some asshat race ahead of me and squeeze into what I like to call a "reasonable stopping distance" just to be ahead of me yesterday afternoon, I became inspired. I'm going to be start a new award for drivers on Calgary roads.

I will call these award The Pitts - The "PeckerHead In Traffic Trophy". For every idiot that tries to pass me in an off-ramp - you win The Pitts. For those buffoons that want to run 130 kilometres per hour in a 50 zone, and flash their lights while they tailgate me aggressively to make me move over - while I'm pulled over on the boulevard to fix a flat tire - you win The Pitts.

This has to be the most aggressive city in North America for entitled ignoramuses that believe they hold title to the lane they are in, and you happen to be occupying "illegally".

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone that thinks their drivers are worse - I'm not adverse to franchising The Pitts. Let's talk!

Stage West Calgary's "The Fox On The Fairway"

My "Sneak-Peek Blog Review"

Full Cast & Director

When you attend The Fox On The Fairway, stick around folks. Stay for the second act, which is full of payoffs in this latest Stage West production. During the first half of the show, you will likely find yourself wondering if you should, but this comedy does find its footing once the cast returns for another go around at the story.

I'm sure that in my official Calgary Herald review I'll join all the others that have used ample golf analogies to comment on this play, set in the middle of an inter-club rivalry between two competing country clubs and the stars they are each fielding to win a substantial bet. Actually, I won't even be able to contain myself here - there's an awful lot of time spent in the rough during the first half. 700-foot fairways played with a chipping wedge. You can't blame the cast, you can only do so much with what you're given. The writing in this endeavour doesn't get past middling until the second half.

The characters as they are written are the guilty party here, I think. While this is admittedly a tribute to the great farces of the 1930's and 1940's, I'd be willing to bet that even that far back, the writers knew when to add a few laughs along the way. For far too long, there are no jokes, or at least none that seemed to connect. The audience went for numerous prolonged periods where there was not even a snicker - not a formula for success in a comedy!

George Wendt & Kevin Hare

Yet when the lights go up for the second half, all the components that failed to connect earlier seemed to grab hard onto the better writing in that act. Star George Wendt chews up his scenes, eliciting heartfelt laughter. The veteran actor can certainly wring a laugh out of a good line.

His real-life wife and co-star here, Bernadette Birkett's character got to have a lot more fun in the second act. And so it was for the entire cast, ending the show to sincere and enthusiastic applause.

I'll go into more detail in my Herald review (link here when that is live and online), but this may be a show that has you wondering if it gets better as it slowly sets the stage in the first act. It certainly does

Reading up on this play, the earlier productions were not well-recieved, but after two or three re-workings, audiences warmed up to it. Playwright Ken Ludwig does know what he's doing for the stage, he is the fellow behind the popular "Lend Me A Tenor", and several more that have earned him a number of awards.

In the early going though, it's hard to see the flag on the green...

The Fox On The Fairway stars George Wendt, Bernadette Birkett, Kevin Hare, Melanie McInenly, Marianne McCord, and Graham Parkhurst. Directed by J. Sean Elliott

Simply Theatre's Adaptation of 12 Angry Men

A work of art might be defined by how it can defy the passing of time and remain relevant or even timely, despite decades and even centuries passing. What might also define that work of art might be how that piece could be presented to new audiences, and still remain so very obvious that it is indeed a profound work of art.

Without a doubt, last night’s premiere of Reginald Rose’ 12 Angry Men by Simply Theatre left the audience standing in unabashed appreciation at the end of this great American classic.

Flawtography, #022

Flawtography, #022:

Stevie Wonder

I've had the good fortune of seeing Stevie Wonder perform live twice. The first time, was in the Winnipeg Arena with my sister. That was a full show, and he was unbelievable! Unforgettable!

Stupendous...

The second time I caught him live was back in 2009, at a Mandela Day event at Radio City Music Hall. he was just part of a star-studded lineup put together in honour of Nelson Mandela. The lineup featured Aretha Franklin, Josh Groban, Will.i.am, Gloria Gaynor, Alicia Keys, Queen Latifah - more acts than I can even remember, although I did document the entire evening in photos.

Like the one above, where you can see Mr. Wonder in his full passion of playing, belting out Happy Birthday, to Mandela.

Brings the whole night back for me, seeing that photo.

Twas The Night Of A Blizzard. In September...

I can't even bring myself to take a picture right now. Well, I can't because it's still too dark.

However, we had a blizzard overnight. In September. Still technically summer, as I understand it. Canadian summer, for sure.

And, it has been below zero, Celsius, which sounds worse than it is, but is still pretty bad.

In a nutshell, the ground is covered in about a foot of snow, it's freezing cold, and I want some answers, Weatherman. Capeesh??

Gotta run, this meteorologist needs some broth to stay alert enough to update me on when normalcy returns to our neck of the woods. And despite his protestations, he does NOT need to have his ropes loosened to do that...

Magpie Armageddon

I don't know anything about where you live, but here in my own backyard there has been a slow and gradual influx of magpies, the scavenger birds related to crows and ravens. Not Heckyl & Jeckyl, these pests have started to gather in large gangs, smoking cigarettes and swinging belt chains.

If I look out my rear window right now, there's at least 10 or more, striking fear into all the other wildlife in the area. They've actually chased a wild jackrabbit away, swooping down at the poor little fella until he moved along.

Yesterday, one was tearing apart a neighbour's lawn chair, probably trying to leave a message of some sort. "You've got till Tuesday, buddy - then...it's curtains!!"

They even look like little thugs, with their chests sticking out, and those cold, gleamy eyes unblinking. The one with the Cher tattoo creeps me out the most, but I suspect he could be leading a double life to fit in with the rest of his pals...

To bad it's illegal to discharge a BB gun in our development, otherwise I might consider pruning the membership, so to speak.

I'll admit, I have a feeling that could backfire on me, literally. I wouldn't want to ruffle those aggressive feathers any more than I have to...

Flying From A Small City

Well, what an adventure yesterday, trying to get back to Calgary!

I asked my cousin to drop me off at 9:00 AM, a good 90 minutes before my flight. Which should have been perfect. As it happened, I barely made my connection...

It started with the automated checkin not offering a baggage tag option, which forced me into two blurry lines of travellers that clearly appeared to have been frozen in time long before I arrived. That was the result of just two workers trying to move passengers onto two full (oversold, actually) flights, complicated further by a broken conveyor belt for the luggage. Nothing against unions, except in situations like this where they are prevented from thinking outside the box to help out a problem that was forcing luggage to get stacked like crows on a country telephone pole...

By the time a third nonchalant employee sauntered up to check in passengers, the two lines had further blurred into a wall of first-come, first serve - the best part was a lady with about 80 pieces of luggage and a brood of moaning children that walked around all of us long growing cobwebs in the queue(s), right to the front of the line(s), and discovered that the airline did NOT have her reservation. Which brought a glacial pace to an even slower procession...

By this time, there were less than 7 minutes to my flight boarding. However, Sleepy beckoned me forward, and I was finally checked in, although I watched nervously as my luggage was stacked on top of a coffeemaker in the airport restaurant across the aisle from the baggage drop counter...

Hastening over to security, I discovered that even though I carry expedited access through that delay tactic at airports, once past the array of guards chatting about the weather, I was funnelled into the same blob of traffic that had been at the counter, rather than another expedited lane for the ritual of emptying my pockets to walk though a detector. As the time ticked by, and my boarding time was about 3 minutes passed, I shook my head, looking up to see the scanner employee notice my displeasure. This prompted my choice for a more "personal" inspection - and even more of a delay.

Eventually, I got through the tiniest airport in the world, in just under an hour. My flight left 15 minutes late, and we were off!

The story doesn't end there, but I'm choosing to ignore the delay when we landed, and had to stay out on the tarmac until our gate was cleared. The important thing is I'm home, and maybe next time I'll see if someone has a spare bazooka they can point towards Alberta...

8th Time is The Charm??

Reminder Of Frailties

Today starts the end of my trip here to Kelowna - even more of a whirlwind than our last visit. The funeral is this morning, then a flurry of family before my return flight home tomorrow morning.

Considering the nature of this get-together, the emotional side is underscored even more by the realization that there is an abundance of frailty here. For sure, emotionally, but even more so physically. Hard to see so many familiar faces challenged by the conversion of time and health.

Yet we are all out united in remembrance. That is the focus for today.

Now We've Gone And Done It!!

Well, after complaining bitterly for years, and choking back our deeply long-ingrained loyalty genes, we have cut the cord, in more ways than one.

As of Sunday, we will have a new internet provider, AND we are dropping TV and phone. Lorde (the young singer of "Royals") knows there are so many options now for getting TV via the internet, and both Mrs. That Dan Guy and I have cell phones - why pay for duplicate services??

It will be an adjustment, for sure, but we are THRILLED (T-H-R-I-L-L-E-D) to kick our old provider to the curb, and hope we are part of a rising tide that will see them swept under by their competitors.

But enough about those jackasses...

For now, we are anxious to see how this brave new world will unfold - regardless, it can't be any worse than what we've lived with for years. And helped fund with not switching...

Open Houses (And How They Can Go Wrong)

My latest REM column outlines how real estate open houses may still be a valuable tool for selling a home, but that doesn't mean the process is without risk - however much of a stretch some of my typical assumptions might be.

Enjoy!

To Facebook Messenger, or Not To Facebook Messenger??

Well, looks like time has run out to be able to see if someone has sent me a direct message on Facebook. Now, if I want to see those, I'll have to install Facebook Messenger.

Frankly, I'm not so sure I have any interest in doing that. Feels like we keep getting pushed around by Facebook, albeit the dang thing is free so who are we to complain - but that doesn't mean we have to jump through every new ("improved") hoop they ram down our throats, does it?

I am not so sure I'll be adding yet another cursed unknown feature, but without it, I'll be having private conversations in public.

Although, I do have text and email - so how much will my life REALLY suffer??

Social media - why do you torment us all so???

AAAARGH!!

Mr. Doubtfire

This is one of my former weekly newspaper columns that ran back in February, 2006...

       "I feel pretty.
Oh, so pretty..."

Nope, no matter how many times I try singing that little Broadway number, I
don't think I'll convince myself, much less anyone else that this guy is anything even
close to attractive in a dress.

So why then am I wearing a dress, you might ask? Well, you can thank my
cousin, who has invited me to a Valentine's Day "theme" trivia party, based on popular
Hollywood movie characters.  Her inventive idea of a sense of humor was to invite me
over as Mrs. Doubtfire, the movie character made famous by Robin Williams.

Now, right off the hop I suppose I could have protested just a bit more, but after
stamping my feet and whining for several hours to no avail, I reluctantly rose to the
challenge. My one provision -  I would NOT, will NEVER shave off my mustache. I've
only done that once before, back when I also had a full beard, and regrettably somehow
failed to connect with the notion that the last few days of summer might not be the best
time of year to try sporting a clean-shaven look. Imagine my surprise after the removal,
glancing in the mirror, and discovering that the top half of my face was nicely tanned
from the summer sun; the bottom part looked like I had bobbed for apples in a tub of
talcum powder...

So, for this party, Mrs. Doubtfire would have to live with a furry lip warmer,
which for the record I did at least try to cover with makeup. The bigger challenge was the
costume itself. My wife owned no dress nearly as stretchy as some miracle fabrics claim
to be. I had to go out, in public, and buy one.

To purchase the dress, I drove until I found an out-of-the-way thrift shop in one of
the city suburbs (far enough away from my own neighborhood, almost Alberta actually),
entered, and casually perused a few selections in the plus-size rack. The older volunteer
salesclerk was clearly as uncomfortable as I was in the women's wear section, but she
eventually mustered up the courage to ask me if I needed any assistance. I smiled, and
said that I was picking up a gift for my mother, who just happened to be about my size.
To her credit, you could barely see her eyebrows rise...

We managed to select for "mother" a nice dress, comfortable shoes, and a
brassiere that I had to take the clerk's word for, regarding fit. Leaving the store I drove
back home, but felt a little like I was trying to smuggle opium into Utah. Obeying every
speed limit along the way, I was never before so happy to see the inside of my garage.

A wig and some makeup has completed my outfit. And now here I stand before a
full-length mirror; lime-green, flowered dress; a visible mustache, covered in runny
foundation; men's glasses; a five o'clock shadow. No matter how late it is, at any bar in
the world, this gal won't be looking any better at closing time. I must remember to
properly thank my cousin, when I see her...

"I feel pretty..."

Holiday!

I'm never sure what holiday exactly is going on, but here in Canada at least, we are enjoying a long weekend today. Bueno!

If this is intended to be a day of sombre reflection, that is what I am currently doing - reflecting...reflecting...

If it should actually be a day of Mardi Gras-like frivolity and celebration, I will do that instead - hey, I'm easy!

If it is a day to remember why we wear pants, I will pay homage to my own, with perhaps a relaxing ironing, or a nice hanging in the closet. Have the day off, Pants - I'll wear shorts!!

I should really look at the calendar to see exactly WHAT the holiday is for today - but after a cup of coffee or two - I am ON holiday, after all...

Thunder Only Happens When It's Raining

Also:

Water only boils when it's heating.

I only wheeze when I'm climbing.

Robins only rockin' when they're in pop songs.

(Funny, I thought this would be MUCH easier...)

Later! - Have a great weekend!!!
