AFI Tribute – Morgan Freeman 2011

You know, if you would have asked me earlier this year who my favourite actor might have been, I would likely have suggested the talented Tom Hanks, or even Jack Nicholson – maybe even Anthony Hopkins? Based on the variety of movies that Mrs. That Dan Guy and I watch, there are many actors that fall under the watch of our celluloid radar, be they in action, comedy or drama pieces.

I wouldn’t have expected our hands-down favourite to be Mr. Morgan Freeman, but the evidence is pretty compelling, having recently watched his American Film Institute tribute…

When the show started to reveal the multitude of roles he’s been featured in, we kept going, “OMG (we really do say OMG around the house…), we’ve seen that movie!” “OMG, we’ve seen that movie too!”

Turns out if there is one actor above all others that keeps us riveted to a screen, it really is Mr. Freeman. From “Bucket List”, to “Million Dollar Baby”, the terrific “Red”, and even on to the little known gems like “10 Items Or Less”, he absolutely grabs the viewers with his screen presence.

I’m almost embarrassed to say that I own his breakout role in “Street Smart”. On Betamax…

I could ramble on all day, but of all the clips the AFI previewed, we had seen every single one. There’s no other actor living or dead with that sort of body of work, that we’ve seen at least. Maybe Jean-Claude Van Damme, but he doesn't do a lot of romantic comedy...

As it happens, back in 2009 we attended the Mandela Day event in NYC, and he was among a galaxy of stars that paid tribute to the iconic leader. That’s where those pics above are from.
